About the product

SIdbMonitor was created by a SQL Server consultant who got tired of logging into dozens of servers just to find the same problems repeatedly.

It provides the visibility most IT teams wish they had, without the complexity of enterprise monitoring platforms.

Questions before you book

What does SIdbMonitor run on?

One Windows server, where it runs as a Windows service. Windows Server 2016 or later is recommended. It ships as a self-contained build, so you do not need to install .NET or anything else first. Installing it needs local administrator rights on that server.

Is anything installed on my SQL Servers?

No. SIdbMonitor connects to each SQL Server over the network on TCP port 1433, plus UDP port 1434 if you use automatic instance discovery. Nothing is installed on the SQL Servers themselves.

What permissions does the monitoring login need?

Nothing close to sysadmin or db_owner. At the server level: VIEW SERVER STATE and VIEW ANY DEFINITION. In msdb: SELECT on dbo.sysjobs and dbo.sysjobhistory for SQL Agent job status, and SELECT on dbo.backupset for backup status. In each database you want monitored: a user in db_datareader with VIEW DATABASE STATE. The installer can create these grants for you using sysadmin credentials once at setup. That password is never stored, and the login used for day-to-day monitoring is never sysadmin.

Which SQL Server versions are supported?

SQL Server 2012 and later. Checks that depend on a feature, such as Query Store (2016 and later) or availability groups, simply return nothing on instances that do not use it. Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance are not supported yet.

How do alerts reach us?

Alerts post to a Microsoft Teams channel, or to any tool that accepts a JSON webhook. Email and text message alerts are not available yet.

Where is our monitoring data stored?

On the Windows server SIdbMonitor runs on, and nowhere else. Nothing is sent to a third-party cloud service. Detailed readings are kept for 14 days, then summarized into hourly figures kept for 90 days.

Who can open the dashboard?

By default the dashboard is only reachable from the SIdbMonitor server itself, on port 5000. It can be opened to your network at install time, which also adds the matching Windows Firewall rule.
